  • My MIL showed up unannounced to our new house, got mad she didn't get the master bedroom.
  • So last week, my husband 34M and I 32F moved into our newly bought home. It's a 3-bedroom place we are really proud of it's been a long time coming and we were excited to finally settle in.

  • My MIL showed up unannounced. No call, no text, no heads-up. Just rang the doorbell with her bag in hand. I opened the door and (trying to stay polite) told her, "Hi, you should have let us know you were coming. It would have helped us prepare."

  • She waved it off like it was nothing, saying "That wasn't necessary. I'm family, I can come anytime."

  • When I showed her to the guest room and told her she could get settled in there. she looked around and said:

  • "Why the guest room? Why not one of the master rooms? After all, I'm not a guest I'm family and should be treated as such."

  • I was stunned. I told her, "This is our home. The master bedrooms are for my husband and me. The guest room is comfortable and was prepared for anyone visiting family."

  • She frowned, didn't say much else, and barely spoke to me the rest of the evening. The next morning, she left without saying goodbye. She told my husband's siblings that i treated her like a total stranger.

  • SoftHandsLennie ⚫ Nah you did the right thing nipping it in the bud then and there. My MIL tried similar tactics and my wife and I both looked at each other and shared a chuckle. It was an awkward year after that, but we're mostly past it. We can tell she's not, but we don't really care. Her dad is the cool one anyway.

  • Duckett-cheats1234 Your husband needs to deal with his mother. He needs to support you otherwise you will painted as the cruel daughter in law.

  • Cheesychocolate6866 Seems to me she was testing the waters to see how far she could get and got mad because she didn't get what she wanted.

  • TapEnvironmental9768 Sounds like worked out well. I wish she'd learned something. At least she showed herself out instead of staying and whining.

  • FunnyGoose5616. NTA. Better to shut this down as quickly as possible. People like your MIL, once they get past your boundaries, there is no chance of getting them to respect your boundaries from that point on. Once they get a foot in the door, they shove it wide open and help themselves to your whole house. I can't imagine going to someone's house unannounced and demanding they give me their bedroom, she's got some nerve!
